10 Years of
Fostering
Connection!
While Miami is one of the most diverse and welcoming places in the world, we also know that diversity by itself doesn't automatically create connection and belonging to our city. In 2016, the 10 Days of Connection was born with the idea that we, as a community, can build a sense of belonging together and for everyone. Over the years, we've seen connections spread across Miami. Schools, parks, libraries, businesses, for impact organizations “nonprofits”, restaurants, museums, places of worship, and community spaces have all become places where people gather with purpose and build bridges that bring them closer to one another.
The world looks very different than it did ten years ago. We've expanded the ways people participate. We've created more opportunities for organizations to collaborate. We've developed new tools, resources, and gatherings that help connections continue long after the ten days are over.
Thanks to the 10 Days of Connection, thousands of people have shared meals with strangers, learned from neighbors, explored different perspectives, laughed together, asked hard questions, and discovered new ways to belong in our city over the past decade.
Through what you’ll read and access below, we plan to make you proud, inspire you, and get you started in your own connection journey as we continue to navigate a highly technological and vastly connected, yet disjointed, world.

I still recall Year 1 of the 10 Days of Connection: a festival of joyful connection born and curated in Miami. It was innovative and easy to get people to participate as there wasn’t anything like it back in 2017. As years progressed, so did our collective impact — remember we’ve grown this thanks to and alongside 500+ organizations — and events became less about needing to engage in community and way more about needing to ensure we connect across lines of difference.
Today, you read words that are full of gratitude, idealistic hope, and critical proactiveness. It is truly remarkable that we’ve accomplished this together: hundreds of organizations coming together every year to unite all the locals that live inside Miami-Dade County, and making it contagious for other cities around the world to do it too. We made hard conversations look easy, taboo topics come to life, and hugs become trendy.
At the same time, old structures, political forces, and some of our intrinsic bad habits are the villains in our story. Therefore, we need to overcome them with intentional gatherings and bridge the gaps with comm-unity. Just coming together won’t be enough if we don’t dare to talk about our fears, our differences, and our diverse approaches to get to the same place.
May the paragraphs below remind you that embracing, celebrating, and leveraging our diversity is not only possible, but doable, and one of the greatest legacies you can leave behind.

A decade of 10 Days of Connection
In late 2016, leaders from six Miami organizations heard locals expressing a need for stronger relationships, deeper understanding, widespread kindness, and increased empathy.
These leaders — Roberta Shevin (ז״ל) (MCCJ), Nancy Ancrum† (Miami Herald), Stephanie Sylvestre (The Children’s Trust), Rebecca Mandelman and Matthew Beatty (The Miami Foundation), Claudia Grillo and Tammy Klingler (United Way of Miami-Dade), and Rebecca Fishman Lipsey (Radical Partners) — came together and decided to take action.
Together, they dreamed up 10 Days of Connection, an initiative to confront increased divisiveness facing communities across the country. As an annual community-led challenge, the 10 Days of Connection became a movement, inspiring all locals to step out of their comfort zone and come together with people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, to unite in our shared humanity.
2017 · photoIt begins
The first 10 Days of Connection is born in Miami-Dade County, out of a common goal to unite in our shared humanity and fight against growing divisiveness.
2018 · photoBroward joins
The 10 Days of Connection expands into Broward County through the leadership of Cori Flam Meltzer (CFM Mediation), making the 10 Days of Connection a regional endeavor through anchor initiatives such as massive potlucks, book-club nights, and live panels.
2019 · photoInstitutional backing
5 key stakeholders joined with their long-term support of this initiative, helping it scale on an institutional level: Leslie Miller Saiontz (Achieve Miami), Claudia Grillo (University of Miami), the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Children’s Services Council of Broward County and the Community Foundation of Broward.
2020 · photoWe go virtual
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we went virtual and found new ways to listen to each other. For the first time, participants drove the expansion outside of South Florida, reaching 43 U.S. states and 57 countries.
2021 · photoA shared formula
We collectively dreamt up an initiative that allowed all of us to safely adventure out of our bubbles to learn from and about others. We co-created bolder, deeper, and meaningful connections, grounded in the formula: Why + Who + What + How to discuss pressing issues and connect for a stronger, more equitable, united world.
2022 · photoHosts connect
We continued moving forward with the 10 Days of Connection formula of success. We also included opportunities for hosts to connect among themselves and began dreaming for our formal expansion beyond South Florida.
2023 · photoNaming loneliness
We learned about the growing Epidemic of Loneliness, embracing that the 10 Days of Connection was one of the solutions to overcome it in our city.
2024 · photoBuilt for impact
We continued the Connection Movement based on the principles of Collective Impact and Systems Level Change. Introducing then that all Connection Experiences must work towards a solution: More Connected, Safer, United, Prosperous, and Active Communities.
2025 · photoBack to basics
We went back to the basics. Despite the community’s change, we stayed committed to work towards a more united, safer and connected community, fostering common spaces to unite in our shared humanity and overcome growing divisiveness.
2026 · photoA decade in
We celebrated a decade of connection, with anchor events powered by local connectors powering community-building year round. We solidified our framework and Connection Experience criteria to include 1) a clear intention with a solution in mind, 2) a taboo topic worth discussing, and 3) an intensity level manageable by both skilled facilitators and participants.

From May 1st – May 10th, 2026, thousands of locals gathered all over South Florida to learn, create, reflect, play, eat, volunteer, and have conversations that don’t happen often enough.
10 Days of Connection from those who participated…
Holding space within the Domino Park reminded me as a leader that curating events around connecting generations together is one of the most undervalued community learning strategies we can leverage to cross lines of difference.
This was a very well curated space and I applaud all who had a role in creating it. I did not expect to be able, or even desire, to share from such a deep place in my heart.
Dance Out of Tradition was well attended and deeply appreciated by attendees, who stayed long after the event ended and asked for similar events in the future. It shows that people genuinely want structured opportunities to discuss challenging topics.

The formula to make it happen.
Behind this year’s 10 Days of Connection, there were months of planning, collaboration, creativity, and care from hundreds of people who believe our community is stronger when we know one another. This is how the 2026 movement came together.
The roadmap
Meeting of the Minds brought 70+ Hosts together over a facilitated group brainstorm to pull their ideas together, sparking partnerships, and shaping the year’s vision. Organizations shared what they were seeing in their communities, identified opportunities to collaborate, and committed to building a stronger, more connected Miami.
Every Host brought their own perspective, community, and expertise. Together, we rallied around one shared goal: creating more opportunities for people to connect across lines of difference.
Our 2026 Hosts
Throughout the planning process, we created regular opportunities for Hosts to gain support in connecting with potential co-hosts, troubleshooting, sharing ideas, and learning from one another. Those strategic conversations helped strengthen experiences before they ever welcomed their first participant.
Hosts received practical digital resources to help them design welcoming experiences, invite participants, facilitate meaningful conversations, and spread the word.
From planning guides and outreach materials to facilitation tips and communication templates, every resource was designed to make it easier to create spaces where people could show up as themselves.
With dozens of experiences hosted by double as many Hosts happening across Miami, our audiences needed one place to discover them and sign up to attend.
The Connection Platform became the community’s home base, making it easy to filter experiences by topic, date, location, and intensity while helping organizations reach new audiences and collect participant information to stay in contact after the 10 Days of Connection.
Together with our hosts and partners, we reached communities across Miami through social media, newsletters, media partnerships, community ambassadors, and thousands of personal invitations.
10 Days of Connection is powered by a community. Our role at Radical Partners is to help bring the pieces together. Leading up to the 10 Days of Connection, our team helped weave partners and ideas together, train around thoughtfully and safely managing difficult conversations, and amplify the collective work of the community.

Our biggest learnings over the years

Civil society is built to do hard, innovative things.
Governments have a role to play; to take care of our basic needs and the state of habitable cities. Oftentimes underbudgeted and underresourced, they don’t get to think or act much on safeguarding community, building unity, and increasing joy. On the other hand, companies have a target in mind and they’re typically built to do just that. Therefore, community building and engaging are on us, change-makers and change-making organizations.
It is our duty to hold governments accountable for doing their job, asking more from companies and businesses, and building the bridges in between. For that, we have to know them, befriend them, build trust with them, test ideas, and offer solutions to implement them. We started the 10 Days of Connection back in 2017. Today, it is being asked of us to hold respectful space for the hard conversations. The future demands that we build communities boldly, smartly, and kindly.

Heart first. Head next. Hands last.
The first year of 10 Days of Connection focused on bringing people together to enjoy each other. While that effort was fruitful, it lacked truly transforming discriminatory mindsets. Because we were adamant about hosting powerful conversations, we unintentionally excluded locals who felt unskilled or uninterested in having difficult conversations or may have felt unsure about saying the wrong thing.
Today we understand that creating safe, neutral environments offering music, food, and hosted in public spaces are the right recipe to bring people together with openness. Only then, can we afford to have intellectual conversations. And only after that, can we dare to ask what they learned and act on what they felt. So if and when you’re bringing people together, we suggest targeting hearts first, pursuing minds next, and activating hands last.

Infrastructure matters more than we think!
In a technological world, the physical and virtual infrastructures we use to bring people together truly matters. Where are you hosting? What does it look like? Is it open and accessible to anyone? How will people find out? How do we encourage them to join and come prepared? Community building and community engagement require easy to access, smooth to use, and growing platforms that adapt to the needs of today and the wants of multiple generations.
We’ve built this platform over the last 3 years and although it is not perfect (yet), we now know that having one central place to convene information, unite our powers, and rally the community truly meets locals (and hosts) where they are.

The pendulum swings between online and offline connection.
What a privilege to be human and witness all of our technological advancements. There are needs that technology cannot meet for us the way we want it to. We prefer for other humans to hug us, teach us, smile at us, and cook for us, no? After decades of rapid progress, we’re realizing that the extreme of being on our phones all the time and depending on apps for solving our problems is not the connection we crave.
When hosting gatherings, we recommend you keep that in mind. We’re facing a time that invites balance between machines and emotions, and we think and hope you oscillate between those two to stay relevant to all living generations.

Community is built at someone’s expense.
Culture, time, and stories shape themselves if we don’t thoughtfully shape them. The same happens with the community. If we want to have safe cities, clean spaces, and communal interactions, someone needs to invest in it. We have some ideas but might not have the right answers. Intentionally designing solutions for the community by the community costs money, time, and requires vision.
Between the costs of food, venue rentals, and curating communications to build trust through consistency, we cannot forget about the resources needed for connection and community building.
A New Era of Connection
Across the country, more people are feeling lonely, isolated, and divided. At the same time, research continues to show what many of us already know: when people feel like they belong, they’re healthier, happier, and more likely to help their neighbors, strengthen their communities, and work together across differences.
The first decade of 10 Days of Connection showed what’s possible when a community makes space for conversations that matter. The next decade is about carrying that spirit into our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, places of worship, and everyday lives. Here’s how we encourage all Hosts, new and old to do that:
