Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be without a home? Did you know that there are 7,057 homeless people in Miami-Dade and over 4,000 living on the streets on an average night? United Way of Miami-Dade and the Community Justice Project are bringing together South Florida locals to walk in the shoes of some of our community’s most vulnerable people. United Way has developed a community simulation activity that shows different scenarios and issues that can contribute to homelessness. This activity will inform and suggest the proper level of care and service needed to support those facing homelessness.

Attendees are divided among four groups based on economic status – upper income, moderate income, working poor, and the homeless. The simulation will allow participants to see first hand what it is like to spend a day in someone else’s shoes. It will provide opportunities for employment so participants can earn money to buy food and pay rent, limited public assistance for those who cannot afford to pay for rent and food, as well as unexpected situations throughout the duration of the simulation. Upon completion of the simulation, attendees will be divided into small groups to discuss what happened during the simulation and to dive deeper into the issues that face so many in our community.
